Andy WARHOL (USA, 1928-1987) - Lot 173
Andy WARHOL (USA, 1928-1987) You're In' Coke Bottle, circa 1967. Glass Coca-Cola bottle, painted with silver spray paint. Signed with the artist's initials in black ink, A. W. (on the cap). Height: 25 cm. Provenance : - former collection of the artist Ultra-Violet. - Galerie Ferrero, Nice. Warhol created the You're In project in 1967 by filling Coke bottles with a cheap cologne called Silver Lining. The project began with an exhibition poster at the Museum of Merchandise, which announced that the bottles were filled with toilet water and was mischievously titled You're In. By suggesting that this Coca-Cola bottle was filled with urine, Warhol seemed to be defaming the product that all Americans use every day: in his 1975 book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, he says: "The President drinks Coca-Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca-Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca-Cola too". The project You're In quickly triggered a scandal on the part of Coca-Cola, leading to its abandonment. This work sums up Warhol's profound and unrivalled ability to preserve and destroy the commercial identity of the everyday object.
