CARDINAL DE FLEURY. 1722. André Hercule de FLEURY, Bishop of - Lot 111
CARDINAL DE FLEURY. 1722. André Hercule de FLEURY, Bishop of FRÉJUS 1699, CARDINAL in 1726 (Lodève (34) 1743 - Issy (Hauts de Seine) ) - Letter signed the Cardinal de FLEURY "from MONT-L'ÉVÊQUE (Château in the Oise region) on July 14, 1740, to Mr de MARVILLE, on wheat speculation: "I have nothing to add, Sir, to all the precautions you have taken for wheat (sic. bleds), and I only hope that all the care you are taking will have the success we should expect. You can see that wherever I go, it's the most interesting subject that occupies everyone, and here I found a maneuver by one of the Intendant's subdelegates, who is a very honest man, and who succeeded. Black Wheat had risen to 28 and 29 Livres and was on the verge of running out. He sent for the main ploughmen and told them with gentleness and friendship that he knew they had a fairly good supply. They all admitted it, and agreed that 10, 12 or other quantities of septiers would be sent to every market until harvest. They agreed to the price, which was settled between them, and this was carried out. Wheat began to fall by 30 sols at the first market, and we have no doubt that it will continue to fall... Tomorrow I shall be in Compiègne, where the King (Louis XV) arrived the day before yesterday in very good health...". 4 pages in-4°
