JAPAN, early 20th century - Lot 222
JAPAN, early 20th century "One hundred masterpieces by Hiroshige and Toyokuni: the processions of the daimyō (Hiroshige Toyokuni meiga hyakushu daimyō dōchū 広重豊国名画百種大名道中) Album of a set of 90 Japanese prints depicting a variety of subjects: famous landscapes and sites along the Tōkaidō, views of ancient towns, bustling neighborhoods, famous stores and their specialties, as well as character scenes. This is a remarkable collective achievement of the Utagawa school, one of the major currents of Edo period ukiyo-e. Directed by Hiroshige II (Morita Chinpei) and Toyokuni III (Utagawa Kunisada), it brings together sixteen renowned artists, including Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Kawanabe Kyōsai, as well as twenty-five publishers. This large-scale collaboration is particularly rare and remains a major work of the Utagawa school. Printed in 1918. 30.5 x 20.5 cm With original cardboard, covers damaged. Wear
