SWITZERLAND, early 19th century - Lot 120
SWITZERLAND, early 19th century Rectangular box with cut sides in 14-carat gold. The lid is finely enameled with a round miniature depicting a maternity ward. The lid surround, frame and base are enameled with geometrical motifs and falling fruit, a symbol of fertility; separated by bands of ambered gold left in reserve. The miniature and fruit symbolism most likely indicate a gift from a man to his wife, the mother of their child. Goldsmith's hallmark "GW" with two wheels; hallmark attributed to the company J.A Chevalier J. Soldano, active in Geneva in the early 19th century. French hallmark coquille Saint-Jacques for 14-carat gold. 7.8 cm x 4.3 cm 1.5 cm high 81.3 grams gross A small chip in the blue enamel on the back of the box and a tiny surface chip in the blue enamel on the underside of the box.
