DANTON. OATH TO THE NATION. Law given in Paris on August 14, 1792, year 4 of Liberty. "The National Assembly, on the motion of one of its members, after having decreed the emergency, decrees that any Frenchman receiving a salary or pension from the State, will be deemed to have irrevocably renounced it, if he does not justify, within a week of the publication of the present decree, that he has taken the following Oath in the municipality of his place of residence; "I swear to be faithful to the Nation and to maintain Liberty and Equality, or, to die defending it."
