NASA. LARGE FORMAT. MOON IO photographed by the VOYAGER spac - Lot 230
NASA. LARGE FORMAT. MOON IO photographed by the VOYAGER space probe in 1979. Io, one of Jupiter's moons, has a significant presence of volcanoes, volcanic pits and lava flows on its surface. Volcanic activity on the moon was first discovered in 1979 by Linda Morabito, an imaging scientist working on Voyager. Observations of Io by visiting spacecraft and ground-based astronomers have revealed more than 150 active volcanoes. Io's volcanism makes it one of only five currently volcanically or cryovolcanically active worlds in the solar system (the others being Earth, Venus, Saturn's moon Enceladus and Neptune's moon Triton). Later chromogenic print. Label on back. 40.6 x 40.6 cm with margins.
