Its picturesque appearance is unique. In this photograph, the central peak of the Tycho crater casts a long, dark shadow as the sun rises over this spectacular lunar landscape. The rugged complex, some 15 kilometers wide, was formed during the giant impact uplift that created the famous Ray crater 100 million years ago.
