JUCHEREAU DE SAINT DENIS (Antoine, baron) Bastia 1778-1842 - General, commanded the French expedition to Greece - Autograph letter signed "Le Général Baron JUCHEREAU DE ST DENIS ancien ministre de France en Grèce" - Paris March 18, 1841 (One of his last letters) to the secretary of the Institut d'Afrique - 1p in-4° : "I have received the diploma you sent me, in the name of the Institut d'Afrique, by which the honorable title of President has been conferred upon me.... I will do everything in my power to cooperate in the work and success of this philanthropic institution. I am sending you ... my work on Algeria, published in 1831 ... we are now returning to the system of colonization I proposed ten years ago, i.e. to establish settlers in villages surrounded by crenellated enclosures, to guarantee against the incursions and rapacity of Bedouin Arabs and Kabyle."
