NASA. Photograph from the Apollo 8 mission (December 1968). - Lot 30
NASA. Photograph from the Apollo 8 mission (December 1968). Historic view of the Earth from space, first observed by man and transmitted live from the spacecraft during a television broadcast from translunar orbit. The image is captured through the window of the space module, as the spacecraft speeds towards the Moon on its translunar trajectory. At this precise moment, the spacecraft is some 284,100 km from the Earth, offering an unprecedented perspective of the planet seen from a cosmic distance. The Earth appears isolated in the vacuum of space, fragile and luminous, reinforcing the historic significance of this live transmission produced by the NASA program. WIRE PHOTOGRAPHY, caption typed on back: "EARTH (FROM APOLLO 8). Ink stamp on back: DEC 24 1968. Newspaper clipping(Title: "THE EARTH AS IT LOOKS FROM NEARLY 200,000 MILES OUT IN SPACE, This picturewas taken from televised program from Apollo 8 spacecraft") + Handwritten remarks on back and in margin on front. Approx. 20.5 x 21.8cm with margin.
