Qissa-yi Jani Begum (The Tale of Princess Jani) Illuminated manuscript (8.25 x 5.75 inches, 212 x 147 mm), written in Urdu on European watermarked paper, 56 leaves, 9 lines per page written in nasta'liq script in black ink, inner margins framed in black and red, 13 illustrations in gouache and gold. India or Pakistan, early 19th century. The colophon seems to indicate 1228 (1813 A.D.). Modern hardback binding. The subject of this tale is the love story of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. Urdu is a standardized Persian variant of Hindustani. It is the official national language and lingua franca of Pakistan. In India, it is one of the 22 official languages recognized by the Indian Constitution, and enjoys official status in the six states of Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. West Bengal, as well as in the national capital, Delhi.
