Scientific manuscript entitled Mensuration of Superficies, 1 - Lot 139
Scientific manuscript entitled Mensuration of Superficies, 1826 30-page notebook. Inside front cover inscribed John K. Eshleman's Manuscript, January the 3rd, A.D. 1826. The manuscript is replete with calligraphy and intricate drawings illustrating mathematical equations explained and solved. The thick paper cover has come loose in one place. John Kendrick Eshleman (1810-1897), a medical doctor, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. A graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, he practiced medicine until 1848, when he retired and devoted himself to horticulture and arboriculture. He planted most of the trees that now adorn the Glen Isle lawn, and was president of the Pomological Society. A fervent abolitionist, he helped make Glen Isle a stop on the Underground Railroad.
