Jean-François MILLET (Gruchy 1814 – Barbizon 1875) - Lot 55
Jean-François MILLET (Gruchy 1814 – Barbizon 1875) Nighttime Bird Hunt Charcoal and pastel highlights on canvas 46 x 47 cm Bears the studio sale stamp in the lower left corner (Lugt no. 1815) Provenance: Sale of the estate of Madame, widow of J. F. Millet, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, April 24–25, 1894, (Durand–Ruel), lot 56; Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby’s, November 17, 1993, lot 81, illustrated. This drawing is a study for Jean-François Millet’s painting *The Torchlight Hunt for Birds*, painted in 1874, which is part of the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (see the exhibition catalog *Millet*, London, Hayward Gallery, 1976, no. 146). The subject was inspired by a childhood memory, as the painter recounted to the young American painter W. Law. The work also takes on a prophetic quality, as it was the last painting Millet created before his death. Another study, also on canvas, is held at the Fine Arts Museum of Boston (see A. Murphy, *Millet—Catalog Raisonné*, Boston, 1984, reproduced on p. 226). Expert: Cabinet René Millet
