Multisport / Cartoons / Track and Field / Boxing / Tennis - Lot 182

Multisport / Cartoons / Track and Field / Boxing / Tennis Gérard de FERRIER (1907–1986) An album of caricatures of athletes from the 1930s and 1940s, comprising about twenty plates (22 x 14 cm) taken from an album published by Marval (Paris). Signed in pen by the artist on the opening page and dated 1943. Most likely a working tool for redrawing. 37.5 x 27.5 cm (gray cover in poor condition; the Fratellini brothers’ heads are slightly creased) It features a lineup of the era’s champions: Track and field, which clearly leads the pack: Pujazon, Chypre, Rochard, Valmy, Lalanne, and high jumper Lapointe (1.96 m) / Boxing: Brun, Diouf, Omar le Noir, Jean Despeaux, Édouard Tenet / Fencing: Edward Gardère, Michel Pécheux. / Cycling: Émile Idée. / Soccer: Émile Veinante / Tennis: Cochet, Petra, Destremau, “Le Grand Mètre,” and Pelizza / Off the field, the Fratellini brothers. A delightful, detailed look by a cartoonist who worked for *L’Athlège* and would later contribute to *Le Monde*.
