Tennis / Photographs / Early History / Lacoste / Racing - Lot 218
Tennis / Photographs / Early History / Lacoste / Racing
Set of 3 photographs, including two silver prints from the 1890s:
- Doubles match in the countryside, mounted silver print, framed, circa 1890. 25 x 32 cm
Rural scene, few spectators, a charming image of tennis’s early days
- The Tournament. Original silver print, with a handwritten vertical note in the margin: “E. Jelussich.” Circa 1890–1900. 19.7 x 26.5 cm
A scene set between the castle and the net. The three judges perched at their table, surrounded by seven cyclists and 11 spectators-players. Only one racket is visible. Edmund Jelussich (1863–1944) was a photographer in Abbazia (now Opatija, Croatia), a fashionable seaside resort in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The photograph likely depicts a tournament held there.
Included: René Lacoste at the Racing Club de France, later reprint. Caption printed on the mount: “René Lacoste, Racing Club de France, 1925.” 20.5 x 28 cm.
