Tennis / Davis Cup 1928 - Lot 229
Tennis / Davis Cup 1928 2 film photographs of the draw for the France–United States Challenge Round, 1928 - President Gaston Doumergue conducts the draw for France, surrounded by officials and executives - Myron T. Herrick, U.S. Ambassador to Paris, conducts the draw for the American team. Mr. Gillou, Bénac, and Reichel can be seen in the audience The Challenge Round was played from July 27 to 29, 1928, at Roland-Garros Stadium, which had been inaugurated two months earlier. It was the first Davis Cup final played in France, and the first on clay. The Musketeers retained the trophy they had won the previous year in Philadelphia, winning 4–1. Lacoste and Cochet in singles, and Borotra and Cochet in doubles, defeated Tilden, Hunter, and Hennessey. Only Tilden saved face by defeating Lacoste. In fact, he should never have played: suspended by his federation for writing paid newspaper articles, he was reinstated at the last minute, largely thanks to the intervention of Ambassador Herrick. In good overall condition; the photograph has creases along the edges. 15 x 22.7 cm
