Count Louis PHELYPEAUX DE PONCHARTRAIN, Chancellor of France, Secretary of State for the King’s Household (1643–1727). Letter signed “PONCHARTRAIN,” from VERSAILLES (Palace) on June 16, 1694: “Sir. By a decree of the Council dated May 25 of this year, the King has restricted the exemption from the reserve force tax granted to officers of the bourgeois militias to those who have paid at least 600 livres for the rank of Captain and 400 livres for that of Lieutenant… Captains and Lieutenants of the bourgeois militias who wish to claim the exemption from the tax for this year must have secured these commissions before April 1…” 1 folio page.
