Duke of VILLARS (Claude Louis Hector), Marshal of France in 1702. (1753–1734), who saved his country through the glorious victory at Denain (July 24, 1712). Governor of Provence in 1712: Letter signed “VILLARS, To the Count d’APCHIER, at AIX (13) on March 23, 1716. 1p in-4°: “Upon my arrival in this city, Sir, I received the letter you wrote to me on the 18th. I am most grateful for the kindness you have shown in wishing to follow me to these parts. I would be very sorry if you were to go to the trouble of doing so, and I beg you to spare yourself the effort. Please believe, Sir, that I remain more devoted to you than to anyone else in the world.”
