Count de MAUREPAS (Jean-Frédéric PHÉLYPEAUX) 1701–1781, Secretary of State, Minister of the Navy – Letter signed MAUREPAS, written at the Château de FONTAINEBLEAU (77) on September 28, 1740, to Mr. FEYDEAU DE MARVILLE. 1 page, in-4°: “The proposal, Sir, contained in the memorandum cannot be carried out, because it assumes that the munitioner has already made his purchases (of wheat) in Languedoc; which is not the case: He even reports that he is in great difficulty and is procuring supplies wherever he can, as he is facing obstacles both in Poitou and in Brittany—the regions from which wheat is sourced to supply PARIS. Moreover, since this shipment is intended for BREST and ROCHEFORT, any replacement supplied to him at TOULON would be of no use to him. I am very pleased to learn of the order and tranquility of the markets and the natural decline in prices brought about by abundance…”
