MARTINIQUE. 6 Letters from 1743 to 1862: A business letter from Martinique dated June 12, 1743, to Honoré ROUX in Marseille (Defects). He offers his services and provides a long list of everything that can be sold at a guaranteed profit, ranging from Provence wine and cheese to velvet, stew spoons, writing sets, shoe buckles, and garters. “If you wish to honor me with your trust ” + Letter from Paris, dated May 13, 1777, addressed to the Marquis de DRÉ at his residence in Roanne, regarding property located in Martinique from the estate of the Marquis de Champigné + Letter from Saint-Pierre, Martinique, May 16, 1822, signed GERVAIS, to his friend, a maritime broker in Blaye. Sugar shipments on ships + A lovely, friendly letter from Vauclin, Martinique, August 1, 1842, to his brother in Duravel, Lot. (Defects): “…Here we have built major roads and bridges, and we maintain them at great expense amid widespread public poverty, for trade is almost nonexistent; sugar and coffee—the former is practically worthless—and we cannot find buyers for them. These two commodities, produced from our soil—the sole resources of the French colonies, once so rich and flourishing, which brought in several million to France’s national treasury, … We do not have to lament misfortunes similar to yours caused by your locomotives… because we do not have railcars to travel in.
