“Letter from the PARLIAMENT OF NORMANDY to the KING (Louis X - Lot 219
“Letter from the PARLIAMENT OF NORMANDY to the KING (Louis XV) regarding the current state of the Parliament of PARIS.” ROUEN (Seine-Maritime), February 26, 1771. Contemporary handwritten copy, unsigned, 8 pages, in-4°: “...Sire, … the happiness of your people and the security of your crown are the purpose of these obligations (The Remonstrances to the King) that you have undertaken. The Parliament of Paris has made every effort to remind Your Majesty of them: its respectful firmness has brought it into disfavor. It owed this firmness to you, Sire; it owed it to God, to conscience, and to the laws of the State, the guardianship of which has been entrusted to it. The dismayed nation asks for its restoration; the recall of all the members of this Parliament will mark the most glorious moment of your reign. Follow, Sire, the promptings of your heart; reign by the laws, and all your magistrates will fall at your feet…” (excerpt)
