Duke of LAVAL, Guy-André-Pierre de MONTMORENCY (1723–1798), Marshal of France in 1783 – Letter signed “MONTMORENCY” (He was then Lieutenant General in the Pays d’AUNIS) – VERSAILLES (78) January 30, 1779 – to Mr. JUIF DE SURAND – A fine three-page folio letter concerning the Coast Guard of the Pays d’AUNIS: “I have received, Sir, the Ordinance that the King has just issued concerning the Coast Guard. You will see that His Majesty has taken steps to provide this force with a more effective, more economical, and more distinguished organization. The AUNIS region, which encompasses the areas that formerly comprised the CHARENTE Captaincy, will henceforth consist of four divisions: one to be known as the MARANS Division, another as the DOMPIERRE Division, one the BOURGNEUF Division, and the other the LE BREUIL Division. Each of these divisions will be divided into companies of 50 men. ” He lists the names of each of the four companies in every division and specifies that candidates for officer positions are to be selected “from among the most prominent residents of the coast.”
