NAVY. MARTINIQUE. 1785. Jean René Antoine, Marquis de VERDUN DE LA CRENNE, Naval Officer and Scientist. Captain of the Navy, commanding the Naval Station of the Windward Islands in March 1785; he was promoted to Division Commander in 1786. (Aucey/Manche 1741–1805) – Signed letter written aboard the ship “LE RÉFLÉCHY” in the harbor of FORT ROYAL (Martinique) on December 15, 1785. 1 page, large folio. “Mr. de ST OURS, Captain of the Royal Frigate ‘IRIS,’ is hereby ordered to set sail from the roadstead of FORT ROYAL (Martinique) and proceed to SAINT PIERRE (Martinique) to replenish his water supply, from where he shall then proceed to Guadeloupe to complete the outfitting of his vessel and, in the prescribed manner, to Mr. de La Bouchetière, Captain of the Navy and Commanding Officer of the frigate LA CLÉOPATRE, the vessel or vessels that have been manned by the officers and crews of the frigate L’IRIS, whom he shall bring back on board, with the exception of the men from the Ponant Department, whom he shall leave at the disposal of Mr. de La Bouchetière. Once he has completed these arrangements, he shall set sail directly for Toulon to be disarmed there.
