Pierre Charles LAURENT DE VILLEDEUIL [Bouchain 1742 – Paris 1828] Comptroller General of Finances. (May–Sept. 1787), He served as the last Secretary of State for the King’s Household on July 25, 1788, and as a Councilor of State on August 30, 1788 – Opposed to the convening of the Estates-General, he emigrated to England in July 1789. He returned to France in 1792 to prepare for another escape by the king following the failure at Varennes. He emigrated again and returned to France during the Restoration - Letter signed “DE VILLEDEUIL,” in VERSAILLES (78), June 30, 1787, to Mr. AMELOT, Intendant of BURGUNDY. - 1 folio page: “... You inform me of an act of courage by two citizens of CHÂLONS-SUR-SAÔNE (71) who saved a young girl’s life. I can only applaud the public expression of appreciation that the municipal officials of CHÂLONS have given to these two honorable citizens...”
