UNREST IN SAINT DOMINGUE. 2 LETTERS: PORT-AU-PRINCE, November 13, 1790. Letter signed “Your Son TINGLEK,” in CAP, addressed to his dear mother in LYON. (Faint postmark: “Colonies via La Rochelle.”), letter received in January 1791. 2pp in-4°. “You will receive from Mr. ROUSSEL the net proceeds from the sale of one barrel of raw sugar and three tierçons of coffee. I feel a little hesitant to send you this, because I do not know how the events that are devastating Saint-Domingue will unfold. Everyone has suffered; peace will restore everything—happiness and tranquility, I hope... I expressly instruct you to take two-thirds of the shellfish and (coffee) beans that I am sending you at the same time..." 2 pages in-4° + UNREST IN SAINT DOMINGUE. Letter from A.S. “DEMANVASDARN” written in LES CAYES (Santo Domingo) on June 28, 1803, arriving by ship from Belle-Île, addressed to Mr. RIVIERES, Sub-Prefect of BAR SUR AUBE. 1 page, in-4°: “I have made it my duty, my dear sir, to inform you of matters of interest to you in this all too unfortunate region. On the 8th of this month, your mother-in-law—who knew little of my misfortune or the events that have unfolded since we were forced to flee our estates to save our lives—arrived in good health. I am fortunate to have her here at home; she will share in our misery. This marks the beginning of the sixth month that we have been refugees in this town. The bandits rule the countryside right up to our doorstep... and the epidemic is wreaking havoc...”
