FRENCH INDIES. 4 Letters: Pondicherry, May 1792. Letter from - Lot 438
FRENCH INDIES. 4 Letters: Pondicherry, May 1792. Letter from MOUROUX to his mother CASTELBAS, wife of a prosecutor in MEAUX (Seine-et-Marne): “… The revolutions that have taken place throughout France may have caused you grief due to the loss of some members of our family, but I will not hide the fact from you that they have done us a great deal of good. They have put an end to the slavery under which those enriched scoundrels made us grovel. I can now confess to you that the leaders in India at that time were very fond of having soldiers flogged. I was fortunate enough to have received no punishment. I work for Mr. Graincourt, who is a bailiff at the High Council of Pondicherry…” + Business letter from NANTES dated October 4, 1853, to Mr. A. D’ILE, Ship’s Captain in PONDICHERY + Letter from General FERRIER in PONDICHERY, East Indies, December 25, 1854, regarding the publication of his book and corrections to be made to his work *Autrefois aux chasseurs d’Afrique*: “…I am still working on *Quinze ans dans l’Asie centrale*, but I am making slow progress. Since the duties of my position take up a large part of my time, very little remains for writing my memoirs; I very much hope to make progress on them in 1860…” + Letter from the Apostolic Vicariate of Pondicherry, April 6, 1884.
