LILLE (59), June 6, 1793, Year 2. “Excerpt from the Order issued by General CUSTINE to the Armies of the NORTH and the ARDENNES, June 5–6 (1793).” “It is forbidden for anyone, regardless of rank, under penalty of being shot, to grant absolute or limited leave, as no grounds or reasons can be valid in wartime for obtaining such leave. Any man caught fleeing or aiding the escape of a soldier shall be shot on the spot without trial...
