NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Comet Hale-Bopp as seen from the space shuttle This photograph shows the brilliant Comet Hale-Bopp, as observed from the space shuttle Columbia during the STS-83 mission. The image was taken with a long exposure time, which makes the comet appear particularly bright. At the bottom of the image, city lights and oil well fires appear as colorful streaks. This view offers a spectacular contrast between Earth and one of the most beautiful comet passes of the 20th century. Hale-Bopp remained visible to the naked eye for nearly 18 months, a record for a modern comet. 1997. Vintage chromogenic print. Numbered on the front.
