The enhanced infrared colors reveal differences in the composition of its icy surface. The lighter areas reflect more infrared light and highlight the various types of terrain. These observations allow scientists to study the dwarf planet’s ice, mountains, and vast plains. This image revealed a world far more complex and varied than astronomers had imagined. 2015.
