NASA. LARGE FORMAT. DEEP SPACE. Cosmic Cloud in the Lagoon Nebula This image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows a vast cloud of gas and dust teeming with young stars. This is the NGC 6530 cluster, located about 4,350 light-years from Earth in the Lagoon Nebula. The dark clouds are regions where new stars are forming. Astronomers also study the disks of gas and dust within them, which can give rise to planets. This photograph reveals one of the largest star-forming regions in our galaxy. Vintage chromogenic print.
