SAINT-QUENTIN (02) – Louis-Nicolas LEMASLE (1788–1876, a pai - Lot 72
SAINT-QUENTIN (02) – Louis-Nicolas LEMASLE (1788–1876, a painter and student of David; he served as director of the Royal School of Drawing in Saint-Quentin) / “Felipe Pellegrini in the role of Uberto” in the opera “Agnès” by Ferdinando Paer (Felipe Pellegrini, 1774–1832, Italian tenor), pen-and-ink drawing attributed to Louis-Nicolas LEMASLE, it is unsigned (it is a working document), but includes a set of handwritten annotations by Lemasle regarding the colors of the frock coat, breeches, and stockings; he has provided two captions: “Si si lo trovero,” a line from Uberto, and “in *Agnes*”—A print was made from this drawing (preserved in the archives of the Teatro Regio in Italy) featuring the same captions, which confirms that this opera premiered in Naples at the Teatro Florentini in 1812, at a time when Lemasle was in the service of the Queen of Naples - The drawing itself (10.5 x 13 cm) was mounted onto a sheet bearing the annotations, which was in turn mounted onto a paper backing forming a passe-partout, the edges of which are defined in ink (25.5 x 27.5 cm, trimmed at the top, with a visible tear); there is an old attribution in pencil at the bottom (incorrect regarding the date of death)—A paper print of the engraving, taken from the Italian website, is enclosed
