Félix de MELENIEWSKI (1846–1908, officer in the Russian Impe - Lot 117
Félix de MELENIEWSKI (1846–1908, officer in the Russian Imperial Army and deputy to the Assembly of the Nobility in Kiev) / Correspondence consisting of two signed autograph letters addressed to the President of the Heraldic Council of France, Viscount de POLI, 3 pages and 4 pages in-8, each on crowned engraved letterhead, from Kiev / May 9, 1894: Upon his arrival in Kiev, he presented to His Excellency Prince Repnin and Count Musin-Pushkin the diplomas from the Heraldic Council of France —These gentlemen ask him to convey to her their gratitude: “His Majesty the Emperor has deigned to appoint the Prince’s daughter, Princess Olga de Répnine, Lady-in-Waiting to Her Majesty the Empress, and Count Musin-Pushkin has been elevated to the rank of Chamberlain to His Majesty the Emperor,” As for himself, “after a week’s stay in the capital of our provinces and the obligatory visits, I shall set out tomorrow for Naraëwka [a castle located in present-day Poland], where I shall take up my summer residence” / November 19, 1894: “It is from the capital of our provinces—where circumstances have forced me to take up my winter quarters earlier than usual—that I am putting pen to paper.” - He thanks his correspondent for his letter - “Yes, you are right to say that sorrows follow one another and are all alike, and don’t you think there is a truly strange coincidence between our two countries? While you were mourning Gounod, we were burying Tchaikovsky; the assassination of President Carnot could serve as a political counterpart to the heinous crime of the assassination of Emperor Alexander II, and the perfectly Christian and truly exemplary death of the Head of the House of France is followed very closely by that of our Sovereign. An end worthy of one another, and one that can and must serve as an example to us—of how one dies when one is a Christian, a King, and a just man. We were deeply touched by the expressions of sympathy in the face of the great misfortune that has just struck us, which have reached us from every corner of this beautiful France that we cherish so much and have come to regard as a second homeland.” - Prince Repnin goes on to express his deep gratitude to his correspondent: “My ladies set out for Hyères about a fortnight ago; they could no longer do without the beautiful Provençal sunshine.”
