[INGRES] - Viscount Alfred ODART de PARIGNY (Art critic and - Lot 131
[INGRES] - Viscount Alfred ODART de PARIGNY (Art critic and pioneer of photography, a field in which he took an early interest) / Important autograph obituary signed on INGRES, 10 p. in-8 presented as a booklet, titled “Mr. Ingres and Contemporary Art”: “Mr. Ingres died in his 87th year {...] Just yesterday he was still there, cheerful and smiling; he was hosting a soirée and playing Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven—his favorite composers—for his guests. He was pleased with his good health and felt optimistic about a winter that had begun under such happy auspices. The following night, a log rolled into his fireplace; he got up, half-naked, to stoke the fire; but suddenly a cold set in, his chest became congested; the illustrious patient was suffocating. Within three days, he was dead”—“Standing before this grave, which has just closed over the last of our great contemporary painters—so late, and yet so early, for France and for art— I feel deeply moved and cannot help but recount here in a few words the luminous legacy of the great man we mourn and the immense role he played in the artistic movement of our time" [Note: The Musée d’Orsay holds an album belonging to Viscount Odart de Persigny containing photographs he took of Ingres and his works; the album begins with this article by the Viscount, published in February 1867 in the magazine *l’Artiste* (a lavish publication edited by Arsène Houssaye) titled “Mr. Ingres and Contemporary Art,” which helps contextualize this manuscript: this is the manuscript of Odart de Persigny’s obituary for Ingres, which appeared in “l’Artiste.”]
