“Essay on Rural Customs” by J.J. G****** [Abbé Jean-Jacques - Lot 273
“Essay on Rural Customs” by J.J. G****** [Abbé Jean-Jacques Gautier, parish priest of La Lande du Goult in the Orne], London, 1787, engraved vignette at the head, 238 pp. plus errata (10 x 16.5 cm), bound in tan Bradel half-leather, smooth spine with decorative lettering, a rare first edition of this portrait of rural life in a Norman village written by its parish priest, which was a great success tinged with scandal) / Bound together with the sequel: “Histoire de l’Essai sur les Mœurs champêtres,” London, 1788, lamp-end illustration, 78 pp. with table of contents, this is the sequel by the same parish priest, in a first edition (the “London” place of publication is apocryphal; to add an element of “sensationalism” and “the forbidden,” the publisher was likely from Alençon)
