Jules-Elie DELAUNAY (Nantes 1828–1891, painter, Prix de Rome; he received official commissions for panels for the Opéra Garnier, Paris City Hall, the nave of the Panthéon, etc., Member of the Academy of Fine Arts) / Victor Menget’s archives concerning Delaunay: purchases of paintings and assistance provided to the painter—Victor Menget, a shoemaker in Baboeuf (Oise), developed the production of army boots in 1870, built factories, and thus made his fortune; all documents are handwritten and signed by Delaunay: 1°) September 13, 1881, receipt for 250 francs for his painting titled “Une Reconnaissance,” 1 page, quarto size, on letterhead “Manufactures de Chaussures Victor Menget – Usine à Baboeuf,” with a revenue stamp – 2°) March 14, 1882, receipt for 500 francs as a loan (originally 450, then canceled), on “Victor Menget Shoe Factory” letterhead, 1 page, quarto size, revenue stamp – 3°) July 30, 1882, Letter (1 page, octavo size): “As I’m about to leave for the countryside, I realize what date it is, and since I have to make a payment on the 31st, I’m writing to ask if you would be willing to add to the document I drafted the amount that would bring the agreed-upon price for the portrait up to the full amount, as without it I would find myself in a bind. This does not commit you any more than the rest until the portrait is finished. If at all possible, I would be a thousand times grateful if you would let me know whether I can come by on Monday morning to pick up your reply.” - 4°) Undated (July 31, 1882), letter (1 p. in-8): “Please do tell the person delivering this note to you whether you have received my letter of yesterday and what you have decided regarding me”—5°) July 7, 1883, receipt for 1,000 francs for his painting “Batterie d’Artillerie” from the 1883 Salon, 1 p in-4 on letterhead of the Victor Menget Shoe Factory, revenue stamp – 6°) January 31, 1884, receipt for 60 francs for a canvas depicting “Peonies” and 2 small sketches of “Women ”— 7°) May 2, 1884, receipt for 110 francs as a loan and a summary below (presumably in Menget’s hand) of amounts paid, 1 p in-12 – 8°) Undated (July 1884), letter (1 p in-8 on mourning paper): “Given your kindness in relieving me of my worries so that I can work at this time, I am writing to inform you that July 15 has passed and I am being asked to pay the amount in question [rent]. If you could do so tomorrow morning, Saturday the 19th, I would be a thousand times grateful to you ” - Enclosed: 3 rent receipts (large oblong in-8) from Delaunay for his artist’s studio at 18 rue Chabrol, each totaling 178.55 francs [Menget kept them in his file, since he was likely the one who paid them]
