Paul CLAUDEL (1868–1955, playwright and diplomat of the Acad - Lot 414
Paul CLAUDEL (1868–1955, playwright and diplomat of the Académie française) / Autograph note signed in response to a letter from publisher Pierre Bertrand of Reims, manager of Editions Hebe, 1 p., in-4: In his letter addressed to Paul Claudel in Reims on November 10, 1946, Pierre Bertrand informs him of their intention to publish a booklet titled “Six Poèmes d’Amour,” illustrated with original engravings by Lemagny, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome - They ask Claudel, with their “respectful admiration,” to contribute to the success of their debut by composing a poem on this subject specifically for the occasion - Pierre Bertrand argues, “hoping that the ‘Great Poet of Champagne’ will kindly grant this request from a ‘young publisher from Reims’” - Claudel does not mince words and returns the young publisher’s letter with the note “I’m sorry, it’s absolutely impossible” crossed out - This seemingly innocuous document offers insight into Claudel’s personality… his response to this novice publisher is quite harsh… - Claudel was originally from Villeneuve-sur-Fère, a small town about fifty kilometers from Reims
