THEATER - Maurice POTTECHER (1867–1960), theater director an - Lot 422
THEATER - Maurice POTTECHER (1867–1960), theater director and founder of the Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang, in the Vosges / Signed autograph letter, 2 pages, in-8 format, on illustrated "Théâtre du Peuple" letterhead, Bussang (Vosges), September 3, 1947, to the critic of the newspaper “Opéra” (a weekly publication on theater, cinema, literature, and the arts): A member of the audience who came to see “Noë” (“Le Sotré de Noë”) showed them the article written by his correspondent, reviewing “Burubu” (“Burubu, or the Wicked Woman and the Gnome,” premiered in 1947), “I was very moved, and my entire troupe was highly satisfied”—“This review, so understanding and so kind, far exceeded the praise usually bestowed upon the author-director and the performers — It articulated my artistic vision with a clarity bound to satisfy a writer who has sought to bring together, for a moment, thought and performance, the elite and the masses, on a stage somewhat different from the rest—and who, after half a century of courageous efforts, seems to have more or less succeeded - But I also thank you for having included in this success an artist whom Parisian critics have at times treated harshly, Pierre Richard Willm—the most selfless of actors and the most devoted to a work from which he derives no financial gain [n.b.: it is Pierre Richard Willm who will succeed Maurice Pottecher] My wife, too, in the role of the Gnome, has belatedly received her share of praise, and all those you have named or who remain anonymous—actors, set painters, and costume designers—have, thanks to you, been rewarded for their dedication and selflessness —I am expressing this rather poorly, because the fatigue that follows two months of rather strenuous effort, compounded by my already advanced age, must not be allowing my mind to grow dull.” - He hopes to have the pleasure of meeting you and requests that you send him a few issues to give to the “friends of La Ruche de Bussang”
