IVORY COAST – INDEPENDENCE 1961 / Gift to official guests: a rare commemorative album of the Ivory Coast’s Independence Day celebrations on August 6 and 7, 1961, featuring 79 original photographs (18 x 24 cm) by Louis NORMAND (born in 1930, he moved to Ivory Coast in 1953 and became the official photographer), including 8 in color, all bearing the photographer’s ink stamp on the back, the album is made of solid olive-colored percaline, with a spiral binding and reinforced transparent plastic insert sheets (the material has deteriorated on a few sheets, without affecting the photos): title page, detailed program of the festivities, 2 official portraits of President Houphouët-Boigny, August 6: aerial view of the Abidjan lagoon, arrival of the delegations and military honors, the airport decked with flags, President H-B in a limousine flanked by motorcyclists passing under a triumphal arch reading “The City of Abidjan Welcomes You,” presentation of the delegates—dressed in tailcoats and top hats—to President H-B at his palace, awarding of the National Order of Côte d’Ivoire, guests at a picnic in the Banco Forest, traditional dances, a motorcade featuring President H-B and Michel Debré in a limousine, sporting events at Champroux Stadium, an intimate dinner at the Presidential Palace, the Palace at night, a torchlight procession; August 7: President H-B’s review of the National Army units, a parade, lunch at the National Assembly, traditional dances at the stadium, an exhibition of Ivorian art at City Hall, a reception at the Palace, and fireworks
