BONPLAND-HUMBOLD EXPEDITION - Aimé BONPLAND (La Rochelle 1773–1858, botanist and explorer) - Alexander von HUMBOLD (1769–1859, German naturalist, geographer, and explorer) - From 1799 to 1804, they undertook a major scientific expedition to the “New World,” exploring Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico; In Mexico, they were received by Tomas MURPHY (1768–1830), a prominent figure in Mexico City; this adventurer, born in Málaga to an Irish father and a mother from Gibraltar, settled in Veracruz in 1791 to engage in import-export trade; In 1797, he married the daughter of the general administrator of Veracruz, which opened wide the doors to trade for him, including port licenses; He became one of the leading figures in free trade between England, the United States, and Central America; as his financial success grew, he invested in mining; his influence became indispensable, and he became an advisor to the colonial government / Autograph letter signed in Spanish by Tomas MURPHY, 4 pages, large quarto, Mexico City, April 26, 1804, addressed to Aimé Bonpland: He believes his correspondent is still in Havana and shares news of an acclaimed actress performing on the Mexico City stage (Bonpland and Humboldt had set sail for Havana a month earlier; in May, they would travel to Washington, D.C., where they would meet President Thomas Jefferson, and they would return to France in June - Tomas MURPHY continued his thriving business while taking on increased political responsibilities; his son, Tomas Murphy II, would become an activist for Mexican independence)
