Claude BILS [1883–1968, painter, illustrator, and caricaturi - Lot 454
Claude BILS [1883–1968, painter, illustrator, and caricaturist] / Signed autograph letter, 2 pages, in-4 format, on letterhead illustrated with an original woodcut by Bils, at the Front, February 6, 1917: "In the same mail, I am sending you Issue No. 2 of our 'Roulante,' which contains the memories of the soldiers in our division for the artists who were kind enough to bring them a few hours of joy through their talent - Like any self-respecting newspaper, the ‘Roulante’ contains typos; I’ve spotted some huge ones, but I’m counting on your friendship to excuse us to your comrades - Issue No. 2 was typeset around January 30—take a look at the press release from that day, and you’ll understand that we were a bit rushed - The engraver, even though I provided him with the program, did not follow Thibaut’s spelling; proper names are not included—he lists “Baillet de l’Odéon,” which is no disgrace, and I myself forgot to engrave his ear—but what can you do? Baillet won over the audience, and the audience was keen to keep it that way—next time we’ll try to do better, but the process is thankless, and it is without pretension that I ask you to accept this memento—Lieutenant Michel will see to it that each and every one of your comrades receives the promised issue."
