Edme-Jacques GENET (Paris 1726–1781) Secretary and Interpreter to the Count of Provence, the future Louis XVIII, and later head of the translators’ office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, War, and the Navy. He was the father of the educator Madame CAMPAN, lady-in-waiting to Marie-Antoinette, and of Edmond-Charles GENET, the first French ambassador to the United States during the French Revolution—Autograph letter signed GENET, from Versailles on April 16, 1776. 2 pages, in-4°: “His Excellency the Count of VERGENNES, Sir, has deigned to entrust me with the task of reviewing the work in question, instructing me on how to handle it in accordance with his intentions, and he has granted me permission to follow his decisions regarding matters that might present difficulties for me. Please accept my most sincere thanks for the kind assistance you have rendered me with such honesty and courtesy on this occasion. I am no less flattered by the hope you have given me that you will come to Versailles to do me and my wife the honor of spending some time with you.
