Antoine de SARTINE, Count of Alby (1729–1801) Lieutenant General of Police, then Minister of the Navy under Louis XVI—Letter signed SARTINE, to Mr. THIRAT in FÉCAMP (Seine-Maritime), from Versailles on June 13, 1778: “I have been informed, Sir, by Mr. LA PELOUZE, Major of the Champagne Regiment, of the courage with which Captain COOPER, an Englishman and commander of one of the ships detained in the port of Fécamp, set out last month to rescue four grenadiers from this regiment who had gone for a walk out to sea and would have perished had it not been for this captain, who risked his own life to save them. I have reported this to the King, and His Majesty, wishing to reward such a noble deed, has charged me with issuing the necessary orders so that this Captain may be free to leave the harbor with his ship, which His Majesty grants him and leaves at his disposal… ” 1 folio page.
