Victor Maurice de RIQUET DE CARAMAN (Paris 1727–1807), General Officer, friend of Marie Antoinette. Descendant of Pierre Paul RIQUET, builder of the Canal du Midi. One of the canal’s principal owners. At the Château de CARAMANS in ROISSY-EN-FRANCE (Val d’Oise), he laid out an English-style park that inspired the creation of Queen Marie-Antoinette’s Hamlet at Versailles - Signed letter from the Count of CARAMAN, dated June 23, 1789, in Marseille. 1 page (19 x 16 cm). At that time, he was the King’s commander in Provence: “I have the honor of requesting, Gentlemen, that you kindly verify the contents of the petition I enclose here, which concerns a resident of your town: And if the claim made by the woman named Émilie Soleil is well-founded, I would be grateful if you would use your good offices to ensure that her belongings are returned to her…”
