AUDE. NARBONNE. Printed address from the “Republican Society of NARBONNE to the National Convention,” public session of June 16, 1793, Year II of the French Republic. This printed letter was sent from Narbonne to the Popular Society of Poitiers. 2 pages, in-4°: “Legislator, are you still at your post, or have you cowardly deserted it! Are you still worthy of the great powers that the People have entrusted to you, or must we declare you the treacherous accomplices of the coalition that seeks to destroy them? What! The National Assembly has been violated and debased; thirty-two deputies have been torn from your grasp, and yet you remain silent and motionless! And the triumphant crime raises a haughty and defiant head around you.⁸ Legislators, vengeance, justice; may the perpetrators of this most criminal violation be annihilated… Lawmakers, speak up! NARBONNE is on its feet; we will take our place among the patriots of all the departments who are rising up; we will all rush en masse to Paris; and we swear by Liberty… ” (On June 2, 1793, 31 members of the Gironde were ordered arrested for having fomented a conspiracy against the establishment and unity of the Republic (1). Among these 31 Girondins, some had fled and incited Normandy and the Lyon region to rise up against Paris. On June 13, 1793, at Robespierre’s request, the Committee of Public Safety was reinforced.)
