I had intended, dear General, to launch an attack yesterday upon my arrival here, and I would have done so had I heard cannon fire to the right, toward Hochspire (HOCHSPEYE, Germany); but there was complete silence. My opinion is, as I have already said, that the enemy had launched its attack on KAISERSLAUTERN (Germany) and will have shifted part of its forces to the Army of the Moselle in order to achieve its threefold objective: to repel the Army of the Moselle, retake TRIER (Germany), and save LUXEMBOURG… Find out about our rear… Send me your orders; you now know my position… I warn you that I have no artillery at the moment. I had sent the three field guns and two campaign guns from Hochstett—that was all I had left. I am short on bread… I repeat that SIBAUD, CAVROIS, and I are together.
