AISNE, SOISSONS. LEBLANC DE BEAULIEU, Jean Claude (1753–1825 - Lot 435
AISNE, SOISSONS. LEBLANC DE BEAULIEU, Jean Claude (1753–1825), Bishop of SOISSONS and LAON; illegitimate son of Charles Louis Claude DUPIN de FRANCUEIL (grandfather of George SAND) and Madame d’ÉPINAY. Constitutional Bishop of Seine-Inférieure in 1799, Bishop of SOISSONS in 1802. He went into exile in London in 1815. Letter A.S. “+ Jean Claude, Bishop of SOISSONS” from Soissons on June 9, 1804. 1 page in 4° with address. Letter to the Archpriest of REIMS, JOYEUX, regarding His Excellency “...My dear and respected friend…you acted with your usual wisdom in withholding my letter to M.G. from him; it seems to me wiser not to make any overtures toward him. If he passes through SOISSONS on his way out of REIMS; if I happen to be there; if I am urged to have him preach; I may propose it to him, but then I will lay out the path so clearly for him that if he strays, he will not be surprised to see me call him to order with the deference due to His Holiness, but also with the respect due to the truth. The letter from Mr. MALHERBE, which I am returning to you, struck me as well-intentioned. He was right to be satisfied with what His Excellency said in his sermon. It is unfortunate that we were in a position where we had to demand it…”
