Edme Aimé LUCOTTE (Côte-d’Or, 1770–1825), General Aide-de-Camp to King JOSEPH, accompanied him to Spain in 1808 – Letter signed in his capacity as Major General, acting as Grand Marshal of the First Squire, by order of King JOSEPH, to the Marquis de GALLO, Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Kingdom of the TWO SICILIES - NAPLES, August 10, 1808 – 2 large folio pages: “... The reports sent from Naples since His Majesty JOSEPH NAPOLEON left the Kingdom have not all been accurate. No furnishings from the Royal Houses have been packed at the Court or in the Palace of which I am Governor, and no one is arranging to ship them out of the kingdom. None of the items that Their Majesties have designated and ordered to be sent to them in Spain are part of the furnishings: The convoys are all on their way... The convoys therefore consist solely of the horses, carriages, and wagons belonging to Their Majesties. The wagons of the convoys contain only the silverware, personal linens, papers, the King’s library, various items of saddlery and livery, and finally the trunks containing the belongings of the persons accompanying Their Majesties to Spain. It is my duty to oversee the departure and safety en route of the convoys carrying the items the King expects in Madrid... and which the Queen has requested from Lyon. I am doing my utmost to ensure that the Royal Palaces remain in the same condition in which King Joseph NAPOLEON left them, and, consequently, worthy of receiving His August Successor. It is your responsibility to inform Her Majesty Queen CAROLINE (Caroline BONAPARTE, wife of MURAT) that no furnishings have been removed...”
