MADIER DE MONTJAU, Joseph-Paulin (Bourg-St-Andéol, Ardèche, 1758 – St-Gervais, 1857), attorney, auditor at the Council of State, elected to the National Assembly in 1830; he joined Louis-Philippe’s government and became public prosecutor in Lyon. In 1841, he made a about-face, fiercely attacking the government and founding *L’Esprit Public*—Letter signed in Paris, June 6, 1832, at 5 a.m.—1 page, in-8°: “Sir, Yesterday, Tuesday, marked the beginning of severe trials. The Republic was put to the test and received as its first tribute rivers of blood amid cries of: ‘The gallows for LOUIS-PHILIPPE and the middle ground.’ Mr. de LA FAYETTE had believed he could control the people by placing a crown on the flag and the red cap. But immediately overwhelmed, he and LAFITTE were met with an ovation that has now left them in despair. This honorable defeat caused them to lose a fragile scepter, which I do not believe they are tempted to reclaim. The National Guard and the regular troops showed not the slightest hesitation, and by nightfall the government had triumphed on all fronts. The King, who had rushed to Saint-Cloud, was greeted with enthusiasm by the military and the Citizen Guard. I hear drums beating everywhere, and if the fighting resumes, the outcome will be even more certain than yesterday, with thirty thousand National Guardsmen and soldiers arriving from all directions...”
