Called to the East as the first of all the colonels in my corps, Chief of Staff of a division that on two memorable occasions was commended by the Commander-in-Chief... cited after the Battle of Inkerman, nominated three times,... not only have I not been appointed, but the Minister does not even wish to grant me the Cross of Commander as compensation. I am, however, a Knight of the Order of the Taking of Constantine... For the past three months, I have been fulfilling the duties of Chief of Staff of an Army Corps at the same time as those of Chief of Staff of a Division… I have been constantly in Africa, seeking every opportunity to serve as actively as possible… I have seen more campaigns than the younger generals.
