Archivist, writer, and historian; President of the Société des Gens de Lettres—Signed autograph letter, dated September 12, 1875, regarding an election to the Académie française. 2 pages, in-8°; “Dear Madam. Since our last meeting, my wife has been extremely ill with a sore throat; as a result of her illness, which has kept me fully occupied, various pending matters have delayed my reply to your letter of the 5th. We are leaving tomorrow for a six-week trip, and all of this prevents me from finding out how to bring the matter you mentioned to a successful conclusion. I cannot predict the outcome—neither for better nor for worse—since I am unaware of the customs practiced under the dome of that illustrious institution. Perhaps I might be able to do something with the Academicians, whom I do not know; as for the others, my recommendation would be of little use for a reason I might tell you, but which I will not write here. Among these “Immortals” is a kind-hearted man who was on our committee, who knows you, and who could help you. His name is Mr. Camille DOUCET; he lives at 32 Rue du Bac. Introduce yourself to him on your own behalf, and not on mine, as that would greatly reduce your chances.
