Paul LEROY-BEAULIEU, French economist and essayist. (Saumur 1843 – Paris 1916). Letter to A.S., Paris, December 13, 1893: “Sir. I am deeply honored by the proposal you have kindly extended to me regarding the upcoming Senate elections in the Gard department. I thank you for this high mark of esteem. However, before replying to you, I had to reflect on the situation in that department. I do not believe the odds are in favor of a slate of candidates such as the one on which you have kindly proposed that I appear… Having just emerged from an election campaign and with numerous projects currently underway, I would not wish to embark on another campaign… that would offer little chance of success…”
